Homeownership 101

Community Housing of Wyandotte County (CHWC) provides low and moderate income homebuyers the convenience and ease of “one-stop shopping” by employing homeownership professionals, educational and counseling programs, and financial guidance and real estate services to ease the stress of purchasing a home.

If you are planning on purchasing your first home and are unsure where to begin, we are here to help! This page provides links to everything a first-time homebuyer needs to know, as well as offers information on homeownership education and assistance.

CHWC is accredited through NeighborWorks America as a full-cycle homeownership program and lender.

Downpayment and Lending Assistance

Our Lending and Homeownership Preservation Specialist, Betty Johnson, has more than 15 years real estate experience. She is here to provide you with everything you need to know regarding the often complicated process of purchasing a home. Many different programs and lenders exist to provide you with downpayment assistance, closing cost assistance, etc. Ms. Johnson will sit down with you one-on-one to explain all your options and guide you through the homebuying process.

Contact Betty Johnson at 913-342-7580 or email to schedule an appointment to speak with her.

Free Homebuyer Education

“I really enjoyed hearing from
our instructor. She explained things
in a way that I learned a lot.
I am so glad that I came!”

- December 2010 class attendee

CHWC is now offering free, monthly Homebuyer Education courses. Courses will cover the following:

  • Budgeting
  • Understanding credit
  • Securing a mortgage loan
  • Shopping for a home
  • Finance Management

Classes occur the second Saturday of every month, and run 9am – 4pm.

Upon completion of the course, individuals receive an official “Certificate of Completion.” This may be used for downpayment assistance when purchasing a home.

On-line Homebuyer Education

CHWC has partnered with eHome America to offer online homebuyer education courses. We understand that because of busy schedules, not everyone can find the time to attend in-person counseling. This online version helps individuals obtain Certified Homebuyer Education at their convenience.

Though this online course cannot replace in-person homebuyer counseling, we believe that participants can gain a thorough understanding of the homebuying process.
