{"id":1893,"date":"2019-12-26T19:40:13","date_gmt":"2019-12-26T19:40:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chwckck.org\/?p=1893"},"modified":"2019-12-26T19:40:13","modified_gmt":"2019-12-26T19:40:13","slug":"car-community-alley-renovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chwckck.org\/2019\/12\/26\/car-community-alley-renovation\/","title":{"rendered":"CAR (Community Alley Renovation)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>Three years ago, CHWC\u2019s Art Squad came up with the idea to start a program that would abate gang tagging and scripting on garages in the alleyways, on walls, and along routes to schools in their community. \u00a0Along with cleaning up the graffiti, they wanted to make the alleyways less frightening and safer for everyone in the neighborhood. \u00a0This program would be called Community Alley Renovation (CAR).<\/p>\n<p>How the program works is simple: the Art Squad talks to the owners of the garages and asks them if they want their garage painted with a mural to cover up or prevent graffiti. \u00a0After receiving permission, they collaborate with the owner to come up with an idea for the mural. \u00a0Finally, a beautiful mural is painted.<\/p>\n<p>Along with painting the murals, the Squad weeds and picks up the trash of each alleyway in which they work. \u00a0CHWC provides a solar power motion detection light on every garage that the Art Squad paints. \u00a0LISC again provided the startup money to get things rolling and last year they received a grant from the National Graffiti Hurts Program.<\/p>\n<p>The CAR program has painted over 16 murals in three connecting alleyways by the Cathedral-St. Peter\u2019s neighborhood\u2019s community garden. \u00a0These murals are bringing more people together.
